OTTAWA POLICE SERVICE
RIDEAU / GOULBOURN

Weekly Activity Report: Apr.30/10 to May 6/10

Patrol Officers in the Rideau/Goulbourn area responded to 54 general calls for service from the public for the reporting period of Apr. 30th to May 6th.  From the 54 service calls the following is a partial breakdown of incidents by Community:

Manotick: 1 Robbery, 1 suspicious, 1 Theft-fr.-Veh.
Stonebridge: 1 Suspicious
Richmond: 1 Fire

In addition to the calls for service, patrol officers are also proactively enforcing the Highway Traffic laws, responding to false 9-1-1 and alarm calls, and assisting the Ottawa Fire, Paramedics and By-law services.

ATTENTION—NORTH GOWER COMMUNITY: A complainant reported to police on Thursday, May 6, that a suspicious male was observed taking pictures of her two kids as they played outside of their house on Callendor Road. As soon as her husband arrived home, the male drove off.   The male was described as having brown skin color and was driving a silver colored Pontiac Grand Am.    The children were advised that should they see the male again they should immediately go inside the house and call police.  The complainant informed her neighbors’ about the incident.

Always remember, you are the eyes and ears in your community, and safety and secure starts with you.

STAY BACK.  STAY WAY BACK!  When driving in and around construction zones—remember to always proceed with caution—especially when maneuvering around frontend loaders. Because these large machines have limited sight lines it is very important to maintain visual contact with the operator at all times and to establish eye contact with him before proceeding through the zone.

Just like those tractor trailers with the bumper sticker that says, “If you can’t see my mirrors, then I can’t see you,” a similar thing can be said about any large construction vehicle.   As you probably already know, Beaverwood Road is closed to local traffic only because of the big pipe construction, and as such, there’s a lot of workers and machinery dancing around inside of the zone.

Last Thursday, a frontend loader backed on top of a small Honda Fit and ended up damaging its hood and windshield.  Because the driver stopped her small vehicle directly behind the loader the operator couldn’t see her vehicle as he was backing up and only stopped when he felt the impact.  Luckily, the driver was able to walk away from the accident uninjured and the car only sustained moderate damage to its hood and front windshield.

Robbery:

Prince of Wales Drive, Manotick: Just before closing on Sat., May 1, two masked suspects entered the gas bar on Prince of Wales Drive and held it up at gunpoint.   After switching off all of the lights to the store the suspects ordered the attendant to open the cash register and hand over the cash.
As the suspects started to stuff cartons of cigarettes into a large plastic bag a witness appeared on scene and demanded to know what was going on. Before she could react, the two suspects bolted past her and disappeared into the night.

The OPS Robbery Unit continues to investigate this robbery. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 613-236-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS (8477). Remember, you call is anonymous and Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display.

Suspicious:

Erinwoods Circle, Stonebridge: A complainant called police dispatchers at 230-6211 after a second suspicious male approached her house at around dinner time, asking to see her hot water tank.  The first incident occurred about 15 minutes earlier.  The complainant stated that something felt suspicious and that she didn’t hear about any inspections from her gas company.

One of the suspicious male’s was described as a dark skin or tanned male, 28-32 yrs-old, large build, approx. 5’9” tall, curly average length hair. The male was wearing a blue golf shirt, dark blue jeans or khakis, and was carrying a large black zippered case.

Excellent job on listening to your ‘spider senses,’ and for calling in your suspicious experience—you are the eyes and ears in your neighborhood.
Remember, Caveat Emptor—Buyer Beware.

Theft:

Doctor Leach Drive, Manotick: Sometime between 8 and 11 p.m. on Mon., May 3, unknown persons entered into a complainant’s unlocked vehicle and stole a wallet containing several identification cards, bank cards and credit cards.  The following day the complainant received a Facebook message indicating that her wallet had been found at the Mac’s Milk in Manotick.  All but one card was returned to the complainant.
